[tex-live] uninitialized line number in pdfTeX

Hi Werner,

    The attached texinfo file produces this error message
      ./WarningProb.texi:-1162167622: Could not find image file [...]

    if processed with
      pdfetex --file-line-error WarningProb.texi

    The reported line number is 0xbabababa; for me this indicates an
    uninitialized (and consequently not set) line number.

Unfortunately, I get ./WarningProb.texi:0: Could not find ...
instead of the bogus value.  Also on i386 GNU/Linux (specifically,
CentOS 5.6), with the same pdf(e)tex and texinfo.tex.  Sigh.

Can you think of anything else in your environment that could be causing
the difference?  Some memory-testing environment variable or something?
I tried running with MALLOC_CHECK_=2, to no avail.
