The reason why I jumped in on the sarcasm earlier was the implied
assertion was that if something is not automatically configured for
pdflatex use, then that has to be a bug.

That is a special case of tunnel vision that has nothing to do with
the matter at hand, and I believe that was deserving of a sarcastic
reply or two.

But I agree that for a non-beginner (*any* non-beginner) changing the 
default should be a simple one-time action, so the default may as well
be some latex-y format to please the crowd (however, I would have
chosen xelatex in that case ...)
