Oops, sorry; that was a typo on my part. The location is:

    /usr/local/texlive/2010/../texmf-local/tex/latex/asymptote/asymptote.sty

which is equivalent to

    /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/asymptote/asymptote.sty

So it is indeed year-independent.
