[tex-live] files generated by fmtutil/updmap -- platform independent?

Are the files generated by updmap and fmtutil platform independent?
Updmap merely generates plain text files, so certainly yes in that case.
Format files are supposed to be platform independent but this is an area
where there seems to be new bugs most years, so you can't be sure unless
you actually try it with the binaries you are shipping. (That is,
generate fmt f on each platform x and read it on each other platform y,
for all f, x and y that you care about.)
Neither of them are *package* independent. If you let your users choose
which packages are installed, e.g., which fonts, then your map file
won't be accurate. OTOH, the extra entries won't cause any harm that I
can think of.
Good luck,
karl
