I am not sure whether you can "chmod +x" on an NTFS filesystem so that
unix systems recognize the files as executables. However, I see
another solution. Create a directory
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/bin/PATH where PATH is i386 or
x86_64 depending upon your platform and copy the executalbe files
there as advised in one of the previous mails. Afterwards symlink all
remaining directories from texmf-dist from your NAS drive. You should
also make symlinks /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf,
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var, /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local.
Executables will find their absolute paths which will be a real
directory on your linux machine. They will then find the root of TL
and append path elements in order to find other files. No matter that
they will be symlinks I hope this approach will work.
