note that on Solaris, /bin/sh is not a POSIX shell (there is a POSIX
shell at /usr/xpg4/bin/sh).

$ ZZZ=/aa/bb/cc/dd
$ echo ${ZZZ%/*}
bad substitution
$ echo ${ZZZ##*/}
bad substitution
