[tex-live] trouble starting context on latest tl2008 developer snapshot

In the latest texlive 2008 developer snapshot (July 5), I'm having
trouble starting context:

  $ context
  MtxRun | unknown script: context

I followed the recommendation, gotten from the context mailing list, to
set

  LUAINPUTS=.;$TEXMF/tex/{context,plain/base,generic}//:$TEXMF/scripts/context/lua
  TEXMFSCRIPTS=.;$TEXMF/tex/{context,plain/base,generic,}//;$TEXMF/scripts/context// 

in texmf.cnf, but doing so has no effect (i.e., the same error arises).  

The luatools program also seems to be having trouble:

  $ luatools --generate
  LuaTools | variable SELFAUTOLOC set to /usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-darwin
  LuaTools | variable SELFAUTODIR set to /usr/local/texlive/2008/bin
  LuaTools | variable SELFAUTOPARENT set to /usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-darwin/

Any idea what might be going on?
