    Another thing: every time I start install-tl, it says for every
    package that md5sums differ, so it redownloads everything... is
    there a way to avoid that?

It doesn't happen for me.  Perhaps the md5 stuff (a recent addition) and
the tlpdb you got are not in sync.  Or maybe it's because your
install-tl is bombing out so early.  Once you get a successful install,
it shouldn't be an issue any more.
