Ah, but you need to run it only when you need to deliver PS. For your
text editing needs, you can cycle between latex (with DVI engine) and
xdvi (heck, xdvi will just update without manual need to reload).
And since latex/DVI will not even _look_ at the graphics, this tends to
be lots faster than latex/PDF which has to include and resource-resolve
graphics every single run.
Even when you are just doing the latex/latex/bibtex/latex cycle.
