[tex-live] font creation problem

The following small test document gives the error

! Font \XXX=ecrm1700 scaled 2488 not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found.
-------------------------------------------
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\newfont\XXX{ecrm1700 scaled \magstep 5}
\end{document}
-------------------------------------------
I have installed the whole TeXLive 2008 including "cm-super". I'm unsure 
  if this is my mistake or a bigger problem. Thanks in advance,
