Just for a lark, how about

	kpsewhich -expand-var "$"SELFAUTOPARENT

On consideration, I'm not sure what you mean by "platform independent"
in this case.  Clearly a script cannot be interpreter-independent; a
script written for sh won't run under csh, perl, ruby, or command.com.
