Beats me, I usually use the tarballs.  I only got perforce to check
out the problem you said you were having.  :/

This is what i do, precisely:

export P4PORT=sun.dante.de:1666
p4 client thisisme
export P4CLIENT=thisisme
p4 sync //depot/Build/source/...

Those 4 lines exactly as they are.
