Thanks much for following it up and for the hack. I recompiled the
solaris version and shared libraries are gone!

Compilation produces a bunch of warnings (I've kept a log file).
One of these caught my eye:

 make[3]: *** Warning: File `etexd.h' has modification time in the future \

 make[3]: warning:  Clock skew detected.  Your build may be incomplete.

Hope this is harmless...
