I think that mktexpk can (and should) be changed to create PKs from
METAFONT files when the MF font exists.
Currently, mktexpk seems to first check for:
gsftopk or ps2pk
ttf2pk
hbf2gf
(if the map files contain that font)
and only as a last resort it runs METAFONT.
Thomas, is there any rationale not to change the default to try to
call METAFONT from mktexpk first (i.e. check for the presence of
file.mf first), and only call gsftopk, ps2pk, ttf2pk, hbf2gf if there
is no MF file?
I think that in case there are both MF and PFB (or TTF) files, the MF
files are the primary source, and PFBs (TTFs) were generated from
them, so calling METAFONT to create PK files will be better.
Best,
