Now that I have gained more experience with Point 11 "kludges" in 
Appendix C/G of the C/WEB manual, I no longer feel too strongly about 
this singular "shortcut" in TEX.WEB. In the recent changes to several 
changefiles and a few WEB sources I used the simpler "kludge" 
'\def\({}', which relies on such C/WEB coding tricks directly.
